Exemplos:

• May I travel with you today? (Eu posso viajar com você hoje?) – faz um pedido.

• My brother and my sister may visit our grandparents this year. (Meu irmão e minha irmã podem visitar nossos avôs este ano) – expressa possibilidade.

Se for formal, utilizamos o "may". Se for informal, utilizamos o "can".
