PUSH > “empurrar” ou “apertar”

1 – Comecemos com pull. Essa palavra tem muitos significados, mas focaremos hoje no sentido de “puxar”:

He knew he should pull the trigger, but he was suddenly paralysed by fear.
Ele sabia que deveria puxar o gatilho, mas ele estava subitamente paralizado de medo.

Help me pull the sofaaway from the wall.
Ajude-me a puxar o sofá para longe da parede.

Pull as hard as you can.
Puxe o mais forte que conseguir.

I climbed into bed and pulled the blankets over my head.
Eu subi na cama e puxei os cobertores sobre minha cabeça.

He pulled a suitcase from beneath the bed.
Ele puxou uma mala de debaixo da cama.

Do you know what to do when someone pulls a knife on you?
Você sabe o que fazer quando alguém puxa uma faca para você?

A lifeguard had to pull her out of the water.
Um salva-vidas teve de puxá-la da água.

2 – Falemos agora de push, primeiramente significando “empurrar”:

He put both hands on the door and pushed as hard as he could.
Ele colocou as duas mãos na porta e empurrou o mais forte que conseguiu.

He was pushing a trolley around the supermarket when I saw him.
Ele estava empurrando um carrinho pelo supermercado quando eu o vi.

The woman pushed back her chair and stood up. 
A mulher empurrou sua cadeira para trás e ficou de pé.

The table had been pushed against the wall.
A mesa havia sido empurrada contra a parede.

I pushed the door with my foot.
Eu empurrei a porta com meu pé.

3 – A expressão push a button, além de ter o sentido literal de “apertar um botão”, também pode ser usada no plural para ter o sentido figurado de provocar ou irritar alguém.

To turn on the television, you push this button.
Para ligar a televisão, você aperta esse botão.

It’s important to remember that only the patient should push the button.
É importante lembrar que somente o paciente deve apertar o botão.

When the jury reach a verdict, they push the button.
Quando o júri chega a um veredicto, eles apertam o botão.

I hate that guy! He’s always trying to push my buttons and he’s doing a good job!
Eu detesto aquele cara! Ele está sempre tentando me irritar e está fazendo um bom trabalho!

No one will be able to push your buttons like your children, but it’s all a part of the adventure of parenthood.
Ninguém conseguirá te irritar como seus filhos, mas isso faz parte da aventura da paternidade.

My mother-in-law really knew how to push my buttons.

4 – Push ainda pode ter o sentido figurado de forçar ou pressionar alguém a fazer algo:

She thanks her parents for keeping her in school and pushing her to study. 
Ela agradece seus pais por mantê-la na escola e a forçar a estudar.

James did not push her into stealing the money.
O James não a forçou a roubar o dinheiro.

His mother pushed him to get a job.
A mão dele o forçou a conseguir um emprego.

A lot of parents push their children, but my dad only encourages and supports me.
Muitos pais pressionam seus filhos, mas meu pai apenas me encoraja e me apoia.

The UnitedStatespushed NATO to authorizemilitaryintervention.
Os Estados Unidos pressionaram a OTAN para autorizar intervenção militar.

If you push him too far, he’ll resign.
