O uso do it

Exemplos:

• It is raining a lot these days. (Está chovendo muito esses dias)
• It is very cold in Russia during the winter. (Faz muito frio na Rússia durante o inverno)
• It is not good to eat fastfood every weekend. (Não faz bem comer fastfood todo final de semana).

O uso do there

Exemplos:

• There is an event this afternoon. It will end at eight o’clock. (Há um evento essa tarde. Ele terminará ás 8 horas)
• There was a lot of work to be done last night. (Havia muito trabalho para ser feito ontem à noite)
• There is nothing worst than this. (Não há nada mais pior que isso)

Quantificando coisas ou pessoas

Exemplos:

• There was a lot of snow last night (Havia muita neve ontem à noite)
• There must be more than 500 hundred people here tonight (Deve ter mais de 500 pessoas aqui hoje à noite)
• There was not one single person at my party last week (Não havia uma única pessoa na minha festa semana passada)

Lugares específicos

Exemplos:

• There are a lot of good places to stay during the holidays (Há muitos lugares para ficar durante os feriados)
• There will be many people interested in this new idea (Haverá muita gente interessada nessa nova ideia)
• There used to be many dogs barking at the end of the street (Costumava ter muitos cachorros latindo no final da rua)

Exceções

Exemplos:

• Do put all the toys back in the box, please. (Coloque todos os brinquedos de volta na caixa, por favor)
• Call the doctor right now, it’s an emergency! (Chame o médico agora mesmo, é uma emergência!)
• Please, don’t scream during the night. (Por favor, não grite durante a noite)
