Quando usar other

Referência a algo ou alguém diferente do que já fora mencionado anteriormente.

Exemplos:

• There are two dresses left. I can buy one and you can buy the other. (Restam dois vestidos. Eu posso comprar um e você pode comprar o outro.)
• A: “I loved this yellow skirt.” (Eu adorei esta saia amarela.)
  B: “I prefer the other.” (Eu prefiro a outra.)
  A.: “The blue one?” (A azul?)
  B: “Yes, the blue one.” (Sim, a azul.)

Plural:

• Some people like buying clothes. Others prefer to spend their money traveling. (Algumas pessoas gostam de comprar roupas. Outras preferem gastar o dinheiro viajando.)
• One student set the rules and the others followed him. (Um aluno definiu as regras e os outros o seguiram.)

Quando usar another

Referência a algo ou alguém adicional, do mesmo tipo de algo ou alguém já mencionado.

Exemplos:

• This computer is broken. I want to use another one. (Este computador está quebrado. Quero usar um outro.)
• If you liked the cake that much, you can eat another piece. (Se você gostou assim tanto do bolo, pode comer outro pedaço.)

IMPORTANTE: se o substantivo ao qual queremos fazer referência estiver no plural, devemos usar sempre a palavra other.

Exemplos:

• I’d like to listen to other songs. (Eu gostaria de ouvir outras músicas.)
• Could you bring me other napkins? (Você poderia me trazer outros guardanapos?)

• Any other: algum outro. Exemplo: Did any other team call you? (Algum outro time telefonou para você?)
• Some are ... than others: alguns são mais ... que outros. Exemplo: Some are more expensive than others. (Alguns são mais caros que outros.)
• Among others: entre outros. Exemplo: He likes playing soccer, basketball, rugby, hockey, volleyball, among others. (Ele gosta de jogar futebol, basquete, rúgbi, hóquei, vôlei, entre outros.)

Expressões com another

• Another one: mais um; mais outro. Exemplo: I loved this popsicle! Could you bring me another one? (Adorei este picolé! Você poderia me trazer mais um?)
• From one ... to another: de um ... para outro. Exemplo: She constantly moves from one apartment to another. (Ele constantemente se muda de um apartamento a outro.)
